Nahum: The Justice of God Devo

Nahum: The Justice of God
Nahum 2: 1-13
Devotional

Scripture Nahum 2: 1-13
Read the scripture daily. Read it slowly. What is God bringing to your attention through this passage?

God’s Justice
When we focus on God’s justice we realize that
God Justice and Righteousness go hand in hand - The truth is we have all broken covenant with God and deserve to be judged for our sin. However, for God, justice and righteousness go hand in hand (doing the right thing). Because of this, God gave himself in Jesus Christ to take the punishment we deserve for our sins.
1 John 1:8-2:3, Psalm 33:5

God alone can judge - we often think about justice in terms of court systems, laws being broken and punishments being handed out. God shows in Nahum that he does bring justice. But we do not act with justice when we assume God’s role as judge. Only God is worthy to judge others.
Matthew 5: 38-39

We are called to act with justice - the prophet Micah says that we are required to act with justice. In other words justice isn’t just about being judge (that is God’s role). We are to stand up for what is right and act in ways that treat people as children of God.
Luke 6: 27-31, Micah 6:8, Isaiah 1:17

Hymn “The Kingdom of God”
Take time this week to consider the text of the hymn “The Kingdom of God”. The first verse states:
The kingdom of god is justice and peace
And joy in the Holy Spirit
Come, Lord and open in us the gates of your kingdom

  • What does this hymn say about the justice of God? What comes to mind when you think about the word “justice”?
  • How do you live act with justice, seeking to serve those around you in the name of Christ?
